The CS1000 Architecture is as shown above. The ELAN is a private management network whilst the TLAN is
connected to the Public” side. Telephones maybe connected to the TLAN directly or to a network routed from
the TLAN (Sometimes referred to as the CLAN Customer LAN).
IP Sets sit on the TLAN or a network attached to the TLAN. They need to communicate with the Call Server to
make and receive calls and this is done by registering with the Signalling server. The Signalling server runs
several pieces of software but the sets use the TPS, Telephone Proxy Server to register with and to
communicate with the call server.
When a set registers TPS records its Virtual TN and IP address so it can identify it. In the call server the set is
defined using the Virtual TN.
The Media Gateway is used to provide card slots for Digital & Analogue cards and any others required. It also
provides other services but importantly the IP/TDM conversion via “Media Cards”. This the Media Gateway is
the path to traditional TDM phone sets and the PSTN.
When an IP set makes a call it messages the Call Server via the TPS on the Sig server. The Call server locates
the endpoint for the call and manages the connection. If it is from one IP set to another the call server will signal
the destination via the TPS. When the call is established the voice travels directly form IP Set to IP Set and NOT
via the sig server or call server.
If the end point is a TDM set the call server messages the Media Gateway to allocate TDM/IP resource as well
as signalling the traditional set. The Voice path for the completed call would be via a Media Card.
